A no go for pay as you go

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Some vehicle tracking companies have speculated that pay as you go will take over from contract in the next couple of years, but V-SOL feels that this trend treats tracking systems as a commodity – just like a mobile phone – and is not a good idea for long term business. It is therefore not a trend we intend to follow and would issue a word of caution to any company considering pay as you go.

Pay as you go may seem like a convenient method, but in the end it will lead to the same quality of customer service that you get on a pay as you go mobile phone. It is unlikely that your provider will be on hand to assist with any problems that you may have.

While part of the reason for pay as you go tracking coming about is related to some early tracking companies being in financial trouble this is not the case with many companies today. It is always important to clarify how you will be looked after with any supplier before signing, but if you’re looking to receive the full benefits from a vehicle tracking system, then a contract with a stable organisation that has a proven record of helping customers with issues will always offers far more benefits and security than pay as you go.

It’s a minefield out there!

There’s a lot of choice in the vehicle tracking market at the moment, so how do you know where to begin?

When making any decision about a supplier we evaluate them to be sure they are right for us – and we’d always recommend you do the same.  In our opinion the best business is done when both the customer and the supplier have like-minded objectives and values.

In terms of vehicle tracking, the technology in this area has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 10 years, and while you can opt for a low cost pay as you go solution the reality is that for most businesses this is never going to give access to the knowledge that comes from a supplier who will commit the time to help you get the most from the technology.

Without spending much more you can get a system that is tailored to your business operations, enabling you to improve performance across the board.  V-SOL, for example, offers a range of solutions, with expert advice from a team who work with you to create your ideal tracking system.

The first step for any business is to look at the real needs of your operations – for example, what information would you need to help you save money now?  Do not be fooled by claims of savings of over £500 per week etc. If your business really was wasting that much per vehicle it would not be a vehicle tracking system that was required!

Put simply, take the time to research and talk to suppliers to find out what they know and how they would work with you to find the best solution for your needs. This is almost certainly going to be one who has the time to help you, and your business will quickly reap the rewards.

Pay as you Go – a cautionary tale for business

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

There’s been a lot of talk about Pay as You Go vehicle tracking. Reflecting the mobile phone market, this system is low cost and really sells on price, but we all know the saying – if it looks too good to be true it probably is – and in this case, if you’re in business, it definitely is.

Any company that has a mobile workforce, no matter what market you’re in, wants to be able to run it more efficiently, improve their operations and their customer service. That way you’ll stay in business for the future and become more profitable. Good vehicle tracking can play a key role in this, delivering the control and reporting needed to significantly improve performance across the board.

But what if you shop on price and go with a Pay as You Go system, install it yourself and power it through your cigarette lighter? I know people who have tried and the truth is that if you need an effective business tool that will help you grow and develop your business no pay as you go solution will ever deliver for you – and then it just becomes a waste of money.

If you are debating the pros and cons of tracking, be sure to look at the complete picture. After all, how many businesses would get pay as you go phones for their staff? None that I know of. So get some proper advice, look at where you want your company to be and how tracking can help you get there, and then you’ll be in a much stronger position for the future.
